“Days before the election, President Obama told an Iowa newspaper that if he won a second term, he would owe his victory in large part to how the Republican Party had “alienated” Latino voters.
So it’s inexplicable that Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski would choose to alienate these very same groups in what could be the first major policy decision of President Obama’s second term.”
As Mr. Obama was making a statement from the Rose Garden about a new immigration policy on Friday afternoon, a reporter from The Daily Caller, a conservative news Web site, repeatedly raised his voice and tried to interrupt. The reporter, Neil Munro, tried to ask whether the policy — intended to help young illegal immigrants get work — was good for legal American workers.

In the good old days, the journalism business was subsidized by all of the other things a newspaper contained apart from the news. This included classified ads, obviously, but also horoscopes, gardening columns, the comic page and other add-ons that had little or nothing to do with news or journalism. Gradually the internet has taken most of these pillars away, and left newspapers with just the hard news — in other words, the only thing no one wants to pay for.
